God Loves A Cheerful Giver | Short Sermon Series

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

~ 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Do you catch yourself reluctant to give? Or do you find yourself having to consider your personal benefits before making your decision? Unlike these, the idea of sowing generously to reap generously isn’t to inspire giving with the intention of having more of God’s blessings. But the focus is - God blesses us for giving.

Cheerful giving takes love and faith. And as we read about the cheerful giver, we realise that it is more than just our own giving and what we reap. Instead it focuses on God.

As the passage continues, ”And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (v8)

Giving is love in action, it is a proof of love. Although love is not something we can see, but we can see the product of love: giving.

What we have been given isn’t to be hoarded for ourselves. We give more, so that our generosity will result in thanksgiving to God (v11).

And through giving generously, we show faith in His providence. Thus reflecting the generous heart of God Himself.

A Prayer to Give Cheerfully (by crosswalk):

It’s not always easy to give, Lord. The more we have, the more we want, but it all belongs to You. Oh, Lord, help us to want to be generous: not merely because You command us to do so, but because it pleases us to obey You.

Father, enlarge our hearts; open our eyes to the needs of others; and show us how to be humble, to give without expectation of earthly reward, knowing that You will reward us in heaven.

Let me never forget that You have already rewarded me with Your presence and have given the greatest and most sacrificial gift: Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
