“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

These were some of the last few words Jesus spoke to His disciples before He ascended up to Heaven, often known as the “Great Commission”. Jesus knew that He couldn’t stay on Earth forever, His time with the disciples was up – He had taught them all they needed to know, and it was time for them to continue the work He had started. Yet Jesus knew that this was no easy feat – the world was harsh and unreceptive to the Word of God. The disciples were sure to face great persecution, just like how Jesus did.

Knowing that His disciples were worried about their future ahead without Jesus, Jesus assured them with words of comfort – “I am with you always”, Jesus said. And if “always” wasn’t specific enough, Jesus expounded that He would be with them forever, “to the end of the age”. The work would be difficult, but it would not be anything that the disciples could not handle. They would be doing it with God working in their hearts, guiding them through the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’s promise of His presence to the disciples is the same promise He gives us. In the times of struggle and fear, we need to remember that we do not carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Jesus promises to be with us, to carry our burdens and to walk through life together with us. May you be encouraged today - Surely, He will never leave us, to the end of the age! And because of this promise, we can set out boldly, proclaiming the good news, and meeting every challenge that comes our way.
