“On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand” is a familiar chorus from a popular hymn. Perhaps the hymn is so popular because of its great truth - compared to the steadfast and unchanging nature of Christ, all other ground truly is sinking sand.
To base our hope on anything other than Christ is to base it on an unstable and shaky foundation. Building our lives on things like wealth, prestige, or even our relationships is to build it on something uncertain. In an instant, it could be taken away, and if we’ve built our lives on that one thing, it will feel like our lives have crumbled to the ground.
The only thing in this life that will never be taken away from us is our hope in Christ and our identities as children of God. If the people we love leave us, if our investments fail, if we lose our jobs, if all else fails - we will still have Jesus. We will always have Jesus.
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalms 27:13-14 Wait for the Lord! Put your hope in God! He’s the only one who will never fail you. He is your constant hope.
