Number Our Days | Short Sermon Series
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
Psalm 90 was prayed by Moses, likely as he was wandering in the wilderness with the Israelites for 40 years. One of the things Moses prays for earnestly in the Psalm is wisdom – but what is interesting here is that Moses believes that gaining wisdom comes from learning to number his days.
What does it mean to number our days? And how will numbering our days bring us wisdom?
To number our days is to recognize the frail nature of humanity, and to understand the shortness of life. It is knowing keenly that this life that we have been given here on earth will not last forever. As children of God, we have the assurance of eternity with God in heaven, but our earthly homes are temporal.
This fact seems rather obvious – we all know that we will die eventually. But it is what we do with this information that really matters. Since our days on earth are numbered, how then should we be living each moment that we have been gifted? How might our lives be different if we lived with a kingdom perspective? Perhaps instead of chasing money and success we would invest more in our relationships – giving more time to the people we love, and giving of ourselves to the last, the least and the lost. Perhaps we would store up treasures in heaven, instead of accumulating material wealth in our houses?
Being able to live with eternity in mind is at the heart of wisdom, and it does not come naturally or easily. This is why Moses asks God to teach him to number his days. May Moses’ prayer be our prayer today as well – let us number our days, never wasting a moment or opportunity to live for Christ or to be His hands and feet to the world around us. And when we meet God face to face in heaven, may He say of us, “well done, good and faithful servant”.
