“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭ ‬‬‬‬‬‬

Do you remember the people who played an instrumental role in bringing you to the faith? For some of us, that may have been our own parents or grandparents, but for others, it may have been a friend, a colleague, or even a stranger!

We were discipled by others when our faith was at its infancy on how to read Scripture and how to live as children of God. As we read the Bible for ourselves, the Holy Spirit within us began to stir up a greater understanding, convicting us on areas of sin in our lives and nudging us to live rightly with God. Scripture also provided us deep comfort, and taught us how to look past the brokenness in our lives and put our hope in the One who would never let us down.

This was no different for Timothy, and in the face of numerous challenges, Paul wanted to encourage Timothy to hold fast to his faith. He wanted Timothy to call to mind all he had learned from those who had discipled him, and to cling on to the truths and promises found in Scripture. Paul knew that doing so would strengthen Timothy’s faith and enable him to do the difficult work ahead of him.

What are the struggles you are battling today? Life often isn’t very neat, and there are always unexpected bumps along the way. If you’re feeling stuck, or close to giving up, let this be your encouragement today to hold fast to your faith. Remember all you have been taught, and dive deep into Scripture.
