“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud... It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

As children of God, we are called to love others just as Christ loved us. And we must focus on the last part of that statement – “just as Christ loved us”. The love that Christ showed to us was the perfect example of what love should be. He did not love out of selfish ambition, He did not love with conditions, He did not love that He might boast. Christ’s love is a 1 Corinthians 13 kind of love – patient, kind and humble. It is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Despite our constant rejection of His love, it still protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres – Christ never gives up on us.

When we are loved with such a perfect love, we are also transformed from the inside out. Christ’s love compels us to become better people, for perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). Without the fear of losing out or being rejected, we are able to love others more completely and unreservedly, just like Christ.

It is the aim of every Christian to continually grow to become more like Christ each day. But the first step to achieving that is to allow yourself to be loved by Christ. As you let the love of Christ fill every part of you, you will soon see the fruit of the Spirit spring up in your life.

Spend some time reading the gospels and meditate upon the love Christ has shown and continues to show to you. As you internalise His love today, may your life be transformed as you grow to become more and more like Him. Remember - the love of Christ is the most important form of nutrition you need!
