Can Do All Things | Short Sermon Series
Today let’s take a closer look at a familiar yet often misunderstood verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 3:14).
While it is true that God can equip and strengthen us to carry out His plans and purposes, what Paul is actually talking about is contentment.
Paul says in the previous verse, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Philippians 4:12
To be content is not an easy feat! The lack of contentment is usually what steals our joy and leaves us unhappy and dissatisfied with our circumstances. Yet it is remarkable that Paul can say, whether he is in need, hungry and imprisoned, or he is well fed, walking free and has plenty – in both situations, he is content.
Well, then, what is the secret to Paul’s superpower of contentment?
It is Christ, who gives him strength.
How wonderful it would be to be content with everything God has given to us. For with contentment comes gratefulness, and with gratefulness comes greater joy.
With more contentment, there would be less grumbling, less impatience, and less frustration in our hearts. We would be able to step back and see the beauty of the story that God is writing each and every day.
Are you struggling with being content in your circumstances today? Let this be your encouragement to look past the discomfort of the present moment and to gaze upon the face of Jesus.
You will find that as you look at Him, you will draw strength from His steady gaze and abundant love. Truly, the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace. And there you will find that your heart is truly content in the safety of His arms.
