Finding meaning at work
Work has always existed and it’s purpose goes beyond providing for our earthly needs.
God’s creation of the universe is described as work. Not only was it good, but God delighted in it as well. We learn that God partners humanity in nurturing the earth in the first chapters of Genesis, and when we connect with God in our work, we are on to way to finding meaning and satisfaction in our work.
“If you make any work the purpose of your life – you create an idol that rivals God. Your relationship with God is the most important foundation of your life, and indeed it keeps all other factors” - Tim Keller
But what about enjoying life? That’s a gift from God, not product of a successful career and great income. Even King Solomon, the wisest and most successful person who ever lived, tells us that all this is a gift from God, not a result of work (Ecc 5:19). Our work serves as a demonstration (Col 3:23) and testament of the transformation of our hearts upon experiencing God’s goodness in our lives (1 Cor 15:58).
The work we do won’t give us any meaning unless we find our meaning in the One who gave us work :)
