I have come to learn to hold on loosely to the things that I have here on Earth. Each day is never promised, be it for me or for the ones I love. Our material resources are also not a given. I cannot say for certain that life will always be peaceful and that no harm will befall me.

Jesus Himself put it plainly in John 16:33, that “in this world you will have trouble”.

And trouble does indeed abound in all of our lives. Time and time again our hearts are wrenched when we see the brokenness of the world.

Although God is in the process of redeeming His Creation, and though Jesus tells us to take heart, for He has overcome the world - the truth is that on this side of eternity, things will never be perfect.

Perhaps that is why Paul tells us to “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18

And in the wise words of CS Lewis, we can also take comfort in the fact that there are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.

Eternity with God after this life passes will be perfect. He will wipe away every tear from our eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things would have passed away.

So take heart, and take hold of this promise - our hope is in Heaven, and though we may be crushed in this life, we shall not despair.
