In Your Relationship With One Another - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8

The humility of Jesus is always so striking. How can it be that our God would humble Himself to the point of leaving His throne in heaven and coming down to earth to suffer and die for our sins? It’s a radical love that should leave us speechless and on our knees in praise.

Jesus modelled humility for us so perfectly during His time here on earth. He washed the feet of His disciples, preached and healed even when He was tired, and even ate with sinners and lepers! The way Jesus humbles Himself in His relationships with others is the example that we, too, should follow. Such humility reflects a genuineness that others will be blown away by.

When we live without selfish ambition or vain conceit, and value others above ourselves, we show them a radical love that can only be attributed to something bigger than ourselves. And so it is. This love comes from Jesus. We love because He first loved us, and we love with a humble love, because this is the same extent of love that Jesus pours on us so freely.

May we learn to be like Jesus in our thoughts and actions – looking not to our own interests, but to the interests of others. Who might be some people in your life that you would like to show love through humility today? Say a prayer over these relationships and make a commitment to love them the way Jesus would.
