Trust Him | Short Sermon Series

”Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

There will be times in our lives where we just won’t understand why God has allowed certain circumstances to arise. In grief and seemingly senseless pain, it’s easy to become frustrated, “Why, God?” we cry out. Why didn’t God protect us from this? Why did this even have to happen? We can imagine that this is what Mary and Martha thought when Jesus arrived too late to heal their brother, Lazarus, and he had passed on. This might also be how some of us feel upon hearing the news of Edward, the brave, young firefighter who died in the line of service.

We may never get a good answer as to why we lose people too early, why innocent civilians suffer in wars, and other hard questions on suffering. These things are the product of the broken and sinful world that we live in. Yet, while we grieve, we do not grieve without hope. God has told us that this broken world is not our home – our stories do not end here, and our suffering is not for nothing. We eagerly anticipate a time where Jesus will return to wipe away every tear from our eyes. We hold fast to the truth that though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. And we take comfort knowing that as Mary and Martha wept, Jesus wept with them. Even as we weep now, Jesus weeps with us.

We may not understand the struggles in our lives, but we can find deep peace knowing that God has promised to walk with us through the deepest valleys. We lean not on our own understanding, but trust in the Lord with all our heart, knowing that even in the most terrifying circumstances, He is good, His plans are good, and He is still in control.
