“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3

These are the very first verses of the very first Psalm in the Bible and they present us with two possible ways of living. We either live according to the world’s wisdom, or we live according to God’s wisdom.

Quite often we find ourselves longing for the shiny things that the world dangles in front of us – success, acceptance, prosperity – the earthly perspective of the world tells us to chase after these things with all our might. It’s important to remember, however, that as Christians, we live according to a different standard of what it means to live a good life. David tells us in this Psalm that to live well is to “delight” in the law of the Lord.

Instead of living according to how the world tells us to live, we are called to recognise the divine wisdom that God has given to us through His word. To delight in God’s word is to meditate upon it regularly – that is what will bring us true wisdom. This is the good life that will lead to richness in Spirit and make us fruitful and prosperous.

Think of a tree that is strong, healthy, and bears good fruit – as we read God’s word and are careful to apply His wisdom to our lives, our roots will grow deeper, and our fruit will grow bigger. Let us therefore strive to live a life that is pleasing to God, seeking His wisdom in all that we do, and trusting in His promises for our future!
