When Things Aren't Going Your Way | Short Sermon Series
Ever felt like things aren’t going your way? Well don’t worry, we all have. Fear not, because God is going to see you through! But it’s easy to feel bad about yourself and angry with God, so here are things that we would like to tell you when things aren’t going your way.
1. You may doubt yourself, and that’s okay.
You may doubt yourself, your skills and your abilities, and that’s okay. It’s only human to doubt, so don’t condemn yourself over it. But what you do when you doubt matters. Will you wallow over it in self-pity and let the devil win? Or will you get back up and fight the devil? Remind yourself that you are God’s MASTERPIECE - fearfully and wonderfully made! And when you’re God’s masterpiece, you’re going to be successful!
“I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are your works, And my soul knows it very well.” Psalms 139:14
2. You may doubt God, and that’s okay.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
You might be wondering if the promises of Matthew 6:33 are true - that ‘I’ve done my part, so where are the provisions, God?’ and that’s okay, but we want you to know that God is a faithful God and He hears your every cry.
The life of the prophet Habakkuk echoes this truth, as he complained to God (Habakkuk 1:1), at the very start of his book, and God did not reject him. Instead, God patiently explained His plan to Habakkuk. By the end of the book, we find Habakkuk saying that “Though the fig tree may not blossom… I will rejoice in the Lord, I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”
God invites us to depend on Him, and not the works of man. To walk by faith and not by sight. But walking by faith often means leaving our comfort zones to trust in His plan and not to give weight to the feelings that surround us. Don’t judge God’s goodness by the circumstances you’re in. Instead, judge your circumstances by God’s goodness!
3. You are in for a roller coaster ride, but God is with you.
An exciting journey lies ahead of you, but it’s likely going to be an emotional roller coaster as well. Some days you will be full of hope, and others not so. But in all this, God is with you. Prophet Elijah probably felt that way too. In times of famine, Elijah had nowhere to go, except to follow the still small voice of God. Elijah would have wanted God to provide more for him so that he wouldn’t have to worry about tomorrow, but God, who used ravens and a widow, provided for him from day to day. Nothing is impossible with God and we can count on His everlasting love for us to provide for our daily needs, without fear of tomorrow!
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23
