“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Psalm 94:19

I listened by Mary C. Plummer - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co

The poem by Mary C. Plummer starts out on a high note – she notices through the songs of the birds that the world is full of wonderful, beautiful things. Yet as the poem progresses, the initial joy is stolen as we are introduced to a man shakes with fear as he sings of how “the trials of life are very hard”.

Life is often like that isn’t it? There are times where we feel like things are going well for us, but we might then meet a tough challenge or setback that makes us shake with fear. And even after we get past that hurdle, we worry about the next time life throws a curveball at us. So how do we live life without feeling this great sense of anxiety all the time?

Twas then I sang a little song - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co

The ending of the poem, as well as Psalm 94:19 clues us in: “O Jesus, draw me close to thee. My comforter Thou art”. When the circumstances of life make us shake with fear, our first action should always be to run to Jesus and stay close to him – He is our comforter, and His consolation will calm our hearts and bring us joy.

Is there something bringing you great anxiety today? Know that Jesus extends His hand to you and desires to bring you comfort. You need only to draw near to Him and experience His overwhelming love and surpassing peace.
