Mother Comforts | Short Sermon Series
We always call God our Father, but did you know that He is also able to relate to us in the same way a mother does?
When a mother gives birth to her child, hormones and biochemical reactions cause her to form a deep emotional attachment to her baby. The feelings of attachment, love and protection she has are instinctive and innate – when she looks at her newborn baby, her heart jumps with joy. Can you imagine that the way God looks at us and what he feels towards us, is just like how a mother looks at her baby? In fact, the love God has for us even surpasses the love a mother has for her child!
God illustrates this in Isa 49:15, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”. It is unlikely that a mother would have no compassion for her baby, but even if that happens, God says that His love is even more sure and steadfast than even the love we receive from our mothers. He will never forget you! What a wonderful thing it is to be loved in such a manner.
May you find comfort today in the love of God, which is as enveloping and deep as the love our mothers have for us. Isa 66:13 says, “As a mother comforts a child, so I will comfort you”. When a child falls or hurts himself, his first instinct is to reach to his mother for comfort, knowing and never doubting that her presence will bring comfort.
Likewise, if there are things weighing on your heart or hurting you today, would you reach out to God with child-like faith, knowing with full confidence that He will draw near and comfort you.
