It's the one thing that we need - Short sermon series by The Commandment Co

The world we live in now is all about the ‘next best thing’. We’re always up to date with trends, using the latest iPhones, flaunting the latest fashion. Our attention is divided among so many things - keeping up with the next best thing and what’s going on in school or work or with our relationships. We live in a world of ‘ many things’, as opposed to the ‘one thing’ the Psalmist in Psalm 27 prays about - to dwell with the Lord forever. In today’s context, it refers to following Jesus.

I'm asking God for one thing, only one thing; to live with Him in His house my whole life long. I'll contemplate His beauty; I'll study at His feet ~ Psalm 27:4

There’s an old hymn which tells us to “turn your eyes upon Jesus” and “the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace”.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus and the things of Earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace

The things of this world are only temporary, and that’s why we see the next best thing out ever so often. But the wonderful thing is that our God isn’t of this world. He is unchanging, and present in every season of our lives! You may have gotten used to moving from one thing to the next, but He is constant and will always be the One thing we can count on.

In an ever-changing world, He is your ever-constant, ever-faithful, ever-loving Father

Let’s make Jesus our focus and sole devotion today, to always seek Him and worship Him. In an ever-changing world, He is your ever-constant, ever-faithful, and ever-loving Father! Let’s be a people of the ONE good thing!
