You Will Rejoice | Short Sermon Series
“So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:22
When Jesus said this to His disciples, He was soon about to be captured and sentenced to be crucified. He knew that there lay in front of the disciples many difficult days of grief and fear, and He wanted to leave His disciples with these words of comfort and encouragement. Though Jesus would be crucified – that would not be the end of the story. Jesus knew that He would overcome death, that He would be resurrected, and that He would appear to His disciples on several occasions before returning to Heaven.
To overcome death and be the ultimate sacrifice for all of humanity’s sins – that was truly a thing to rejoice about. No longer would man be separated from God, but finally, through Jesus, we would be able to be reconciled back to Him. Truly, that would be a joy that nobody could ever take away.
In the midst of the deep grief and sorrow that this world brings, would the words Jesus spoke in John 16:22 bring you greater comfort. You might grieve now, but there lies a hope of incredible joy that awaits you beyond your life on Earth. We must always remember that this is not our true home – we’re living for something greater. And so, with that hope set before us, would we approach the struggles and trials of life with greater courage. Jesus has overcome death – there is no need to fear! Let us live boldly, holding within us a joy and peace that surpasses all understanding.
