Peace | Short Sermon Series
“In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, LORD, have me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8
When life gets overwhelming and many troubles and worries fill your mind, it can be difficult to get a good night’s rest. If you have been struggling to fall asleep, or your sleep has not been very restful, may Psalm 4:8 be a great encouragement to you.
Psalm 4:8 was written by David, likely when he was on the run from Saul. Imagine having to leave everything you know and run for your life, knowing that a king with a great army is chasing after you and seeking to kill you. It is thus remarkable that David can say, “In peace I will both lie down and sleep”. How can David sleep peacefully, knowing that at any time he could be attacked?
The answer is simple, and David knows it “for You alone, LORD, have me dwell in safety”. David knew that God was his protector – God promised that He would deliver David and keep him from harm, and David trusted God’s goodness and faithfulness. With the knowledge that God watched over him as he slept, David was able to have a peaceful sleep, yielding his life into the hands of his good Father and not worrying about having to fight to protect his own life.
David’s wholehearted trust in God is something we can learn from. God has told us that He is our father, that we have been adopted as children of God, and that we are no longer slaves to fear (Romans 8:15-16). Knowing that we are God’s child and He is our father, we can rest easy in the assurance that He will always, always take care of us. If there are thoughts keeping you awake at night, surrender them to the Father, and know that in His arms, you dwell in safety ❤.
