The true vine abide in Him | Short Sermon Series
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
~ John 15:5
Isn’t it such a shame that stalks of flowers given to you at special occasions always end up wilting after a few days? Why does this happen? Because they have been cut off from their source of nutrition – they are no longer attached to the bushes and trees they grew from!
This is what Jesus is talking about in John 15:5: He is the true vine that supplies us with the strength, grace, peace, love, and more, to sustain us through life. We are the branches that are attached to the vine, and as we receive from the abundance that Jesus gives to us, we are able to grow and produce flowers and fruit. Like when you cut off stalks of flowers from their sources, if we detach ourselves from Jesus, we no longer are able to sustain ourselves and our spiritual bodies will wilt away. Apart from Jesus – we can do nothing!
Jesus tells us to “abide” in Him, and in other translations, “remain” - that is, to live and to dwell with Jesus. To abide is not to pray and read your Bible once a day, or go to church once a week! To abide is to live every second of every day in the knowledge that you are a Child of God. Your relationship with Jesus cannot be compartmentalised into just sections of your day or week – it is realised every single moment. It is a way of living.
