“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour.” Habakkuk 3:17-18

As Christians we live counter-culturally, seeing the world with upside down lenses.

We know that the last will be first and the first shall be last, and we know from the beatitudes that the most broken and persecuted people are deeply loved and treasured by God.

So when the world before us crumbles and fear sweeps across the nations, we do not fear.

As Paul says, we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

That is how joy still lives in us even in the darkest of times – we take hold of a greater hope and look towards eternity. We take joy in the knowledge that God saves us from the brokenness of this world.

Truly, with Him by our side, there is nothing to fear.
