Our God is not a dictator – He has given us the ability to choose and to make decisions for ourselves. How we choose is what matters most and what will set us apart from the world.

The Israelites were faced with this decision time and time again as they wandered in the wilderness, until Joshua, fed up of their fickleness and wavering hearts, challenged them - “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.” (Joshua 24:15)

Joshua issued this strong warning to the Israelites to get them to really think about where their hearts lay and who they would commit themselves to. He then reveals his own choice, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

Today, we may not be enamoured by the gods beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, but make no mistake that idols still reside in our hearts. However, instead of taking the form of statues or golden calves, they may be more subtle.

An idol is anything that holds a position higher than God in our hearts. It is the thing that you find most difficult to give up to God and might be the thing you spend the most time thinking about. For instance, maybe it’s the comfort you desire from a relationship, or the security of a well-paying job. While such things are not evils in themselves, we need to guard our hearts to ensure that we remain open to hearing and heeding what God desires for our lives.

Do not let the glittering things in the world catch your eye and pull you away from the true prize in this life. What would it profit you to gain the world but lose your soul? Choose today, who you will serve, for a man cannot serve two masters.
