Every National Day, we celebrate Singapore's journey - reflecting on how far we've come, giving thanks for peace, progress, and the people who call this nation home.

As Christians, National Day is also a meaningful reminder that beyond flying the flag or singing familiar songs, we have the privilege of lifting our nation up in prayer.

We often pray for ourselves, our families, our friends, or the situations closest to our hearts. But what about our country?

With millions of people, diverse cultures, different beliefs, and countless needs, praying for a nation can feel overwhelming. Where do we even begin? Should we pray for our leaders, our economy, our schools, our communities? How do we know if we've covered enough?

Why do we fret about our futures when God has already promised us that He will take care of us? Our lives are held securely in His hands. In every storm and terrible circumstance, His presence and peace will remain. 

“But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands;” Psalm 31:14-15a

Have you ever felt like your life was on fire - like there were so many broken parts and unresolved issues that you didn’t know how you would ever feel at peace again?

Messiness and brokenness are a given in this life - but as Christians, we do not live without hope. We have a promise from God that He will come and restore the world, and our lives - and the beautiful thing we must remember is that this restoration doesn’t just come when Christ comes again.

Our God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing our God cannot do, for you! 

That’s how the chorus of a familiar song some of you might have learnt in sunday school goes. 

And it is true! God is so big and powerful. He is so good and so full of light that no darkness can ever overcome that light.

Did you know that God loves you so deeply that He keeps track of every single tear you’ve cried?

“You keep track of all my sorrows.

    You have collected all my tears in your bottle.

    You have recorded each one in your book.” Psalm 56:8

We often have our own plans and dreams that we want to rush forward to accomplish - yet time and time again we read in Scripture that if God is not in the midst of our plans, it often never goes too well.

There is no better place to be than in the presence of God. In Him is everlasting joy, peace and love. 

In fact, being with God is so life-giving that the psalmist declares that just one day with God is much more fulfilling than a thousand anywhere else.

“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.” Ps 84:10

When your heart aches, when it feels like it’s in a million pieces, know that the Lord sees your pain.

He sees your tears and not a single one goes unnoticed.

Do you ever feel like you’ve been sprinting through life? Putting out the fires as they come, trying to do everything all at once and be everything to everyone?

When you truly pause and sit still for a moment to catch your breath, you will realise just how out of breath you are.

As children of God, we are called not just to survive, but to thrive - to live lives of prosperity.

But what does prospering look like in the kingdom of God? Is a prosperous life one of riches and success? 

The day of Pentecost was unlike any other. The followers of Jesus were gathered together, when suddenly the Holy Spirit came like a rushing wind, filling the room and filling their hearts. Flames rested upon them, and words of truth poured out of their mouths in languages they had never learned. Confusion turned to awe as Peter stood and declared, “This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.”

“... I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” ‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬ ‭

Storms in your life are a given, as is news that feels like an earthquake, shaking and upending your world.

What then can we cling on to if every foundation we build our lives upon is shaky?
