Abide In Me | Short Sermon Series

Abide In Me - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
What does it mean to abide? The Greek word for abide used most frequently in the New Testament was menō – μένω. This word is translated as “to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy): – continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain.” The definition includes concepts of interpersonal relationships about being in a shared space, but the concept of “staying” is the focus.

Walk By Faith | Short Sermon Series

Walk By Faith - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
Faith, to most people, is quite an abstract idea. What does it really mean to have faith? The Bible teaches us that faith is “confidence in what we hope for, and assurance about what we do not see” (Heb 11:1). Hmm… that’s still quite theoretical. So let’s apply it to a practical example!

Disciples | Short Sermon Series

Disciples - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
Acts 13:52 is a very puzzling verse!
It comes right after we learn that Paul and Barnabas were being persecuted for preaching and teaching in the synagogue of Pisidian Antioch (modern-day Turkey). The Jewish leaders, jealous of all the attention that Paul and Barnabas were receiving, “stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.” (Acts 13:45).

Be Joyful Always | Short Sermon Series

Be Joyful Always - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
The Christian people are to be a joyful people! This joy is not akin to the same idea of “happiness” that the secular world has, it is vastly different. Happiness is dependent on circumstance – we are happy to do well in school or work and happy when good things come our way. But joy is a state of being, a posture of the heart that remains steadfast even in the bad times.

Be Joyful In Hope | Short Sermon Series

Be Joyful In Hope - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
When storm clouds loom and we find ourselves in the midst of a trying season or situation, how do we respond? Do we get frustrated, annoyed and dissatisfied with our lives? Perhaps there is a better way to deal with times where life is not as fun or smooth sailing as we would like it to be. Paul’s nuggets of wisdom to the Romans a thousand years ago are still nuggets of wisdom for us today!

Give Thanks - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

The Thessalonian church was under heavy persecution – those who had professed their faith in Christ were having their properties seized, they were prevented from working, shunned by their families, insulted, beaten and even put to death.

In Your Relationship With One Another | Short Sermon Series

In Your Relationship With One Another - Encouraging short sermons and devotionals compiled by The Commandment Co
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8
The humility of Jesus is always so striking. How can it be that our God would humble Himself to the point of leaving His throne in heaven and coming down to earth to suffer and die for our sins? It’s a radical love that should leave us speechless and on our knees in praise.
