“The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Nehemiah 8:10

At times the circumstances of our lives can feel like we’re being thrust into the ocean, and the waves seem strong enough to drown us. It can feel like we’re being thrust into a fire and the flames might burn us up.

When something troubles us, it’s often challenging for us to think of anything other than the problem that plagues us. We may ruminate about it, or it may be a nagging thought at the back of our minds that leaves us feeling uncomfortable and that steals our peace.

We worry because the outcomes of our problems are uncertain, and we fear that we will be hurt in one way or another.

My Grace Is Sufficient For You | Short Sermon Series

These words were spoken to Paul by God when Paul was given a “thorn in his flesh”, or in his own words, “a messenger of Satan, to torment me” (2 Cor 12:7). Paul shares that he pleaded with God three times to take it away from him, but instead of taking away the torment that Paul was experiencing – God said to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”.

Some of us might look at this exchange and be indignant – why didn’t God just remove the pain that Paul was going through? One snap of His fingers and Paul could be well – so why was God withholding healing?

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3

These are the very first verses of the very first Psalm in the Bible and they present us with two possible ways of living. We either live according to the world’s wisdom, or we live according to God’s wisdom.

“So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:22

When Jesus said this to His disciples, He was soon about to be captured and sentenced to be crucified. He knew that there lay in front of the disciples many difficult days of grief and fear, and He wanted to leave His disciples with these words of comfort and encouragement.
